Privelege for Oberammergau after Rosner's Play was revised by the Benedictine M. Knipfelberger (1747-1825). He reduced the play to 4.809 verses.1811 As a result of Montgelas' prohibition in 1801 the Play was not performed until 1811 after the submission of a new text by the monk Dr. Othmar Weis (1769-1843), priest of Ettal. This text focused on the gospels and the idea of atonement, removed the mythology and legends, introduced contemporary theology, prose style, realism and moralising interpretations of the tableaux and reference to social conflicts.
